I thought this was poignant and a little sad. You can't make a dog understand how long you'll be gone.

It did the same to me. I kept thinking about how the dog must have felt alone, worried, confused, and heartbroken. A year for us, seven or so for them. Will Mom ever return?

The only thing that kept me from crying was hearing the other woman talk. She must have been a good caretaker while Mom was off to war.
