What We Hear
Feb. 23rd, 2014 10:14 amDot and I have been listening to birds with a shrill cry they sound after it gets dark. It's a little annoying so I wanted to find out what they are. Since they're running around right outside the window I started the search in Google images and at first came up with a Snowy Plover till one held real still so I could better see its neck rings.
Then I linked back to a great ornithology site and found the Killdeer. Link to its page, click on the Sound tab, then scroll down and listen to the Flight Call, you'll understand just how annoying this piercing cry is on an otherwise quiet night. The last "alarm calls" sound we're also familiar with thanks to Dot's outstanding hunting skills. In fact, listening to them on the puter has got her a little curious about how she can get to the bird in my laptop.
So my newest yard friend is the Killdeer.

Now I need to read more about their ground nests and so forth and find out if I can draw other birds to my yard so I'll at least have some diversity of sound.
